Mount Falerio (684 m a.s.l.) is one of the most evocative destinations for those seeking an aerial perspective on the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. It can be reached from several sides: I chose to hike up starting from the territory of Cetara, but a popular alternative starts from Dragonea (a hamlet of Vietri sul Mare).
The Trail and My Philosophy
The path is not particularly challenging for most of its length, except for the final stretch towards the summit which requires one last push. While technical guides suggest a hiking time of about 2.5 hours, it personally took me over 3 hours just for the ascent.
This is because I don't see trekking as a speed race or an athletic challenge: the mountain is meant to be experienced. I took numerous breaks to take photos and soak in the silence of the woods. My invitation is exactly this: take your time. Don't rush to the finish line, but enjoy every single meter of the trail. Haste is the enemy of contemplation.
The View from the Summit
Once you reach the top, the view is extraordinary. The height directly overlooks the city of Salerno and the village of Vietri sul Mare, while Cetara can be seen further in the distance nestled between the coastal coves. It is one of the best viewpoints to embrace the entire Gulf of Salerno.
FAQ
What is the best starting point?
It depends on where you are staying. From Dragonea (Vietri), the path is slightly easier and shorter. From Cetara, the climb is more direct, offering a beautiful transition from coastal scrub to mountain woods, but it requires a bit more physical effort.
How long does it take to reach the summit?
While technical charts suggest about 2.5 hours, I recommend planning for at least 3 hours or more. Mount Falerio offers views that deserve long breaks for photos and to enjoy the silence; there’s no point in rushing through such a scenic place.
Is the trail suitable for everyone?
The trail is classified as E (Hiking). There are no technical dangers, but the final stretch to the summit is quite steep. It is recommended for those used to uphill walking and, of course, proper hiking shoes with good grip.
What can you see from the top?
From the summit (684 m), you have a "bird's eye view" of Salerno and Vietri sul Mare. In the distance, you can spot Cetara, and on clear days, your gaze can reach as far as the Plain of Sele and the Cilento mountains.
